Microwave Door Won't Close in Redondo Beach

Microwave door problems are surprisingly common in Redondo Beach, and the reasons vary dramatically between the harbor area and North Redondo. Down near the Esplanade and King Harbor, the constant salt air wreaks havoc on metal door components — we regularly replace corroded door latches and hinges that have seized up from salt exposure. Those waterfront condos and townhomes built in the 80s and 90s often have their microwaves mounted above the stove, where they catch even more salt-laden moisture from cooking. The torsion springs that help the door open and close smoothly are particularly vulnerable, often snapping after just a few years of coastal exposure.

North Redondo presents different challenges entirely. The older ranch homes near Aviation Boulevard typically house microwaves that are 10-15 years old — mostly Whirlpool and GE units that came with kitchen remodels in the early 2010s. Here, the issue is usually mechanical wear rather than corrosion. Door hooks wear down from years of use, and the plastic door switches start failing. We see a lot of Samsung and LG countertop units in the Riviera Village bungalows that have been renovated, and these newer models have more complex door mechanisms that can misalign if the microwave gets bumped or moved frequently during kitchen updates.
