    What Error Code PE Means

Your Samsung top-load washer displays PE when the clutch position sensor reports an abnormal reading to the main control board. The clutch assembly in top-load Samsung washers shifts between wash (agitation) and spin modes. The position sensor confirms the clutch has engaged the correct mode. When the sensor signal is missing or out of range, the washer cannot safely transition between wash and spin phases.

    PC

    Common Causes

    Failed clutch position sensor

The Hall-effect sensor on the clutch assembly fails electrically. It no longer sends a position signal to the control board. This is the most frequent cause of PE.

    Worn clutch assembly

The mechanical clutch plates wear down over time, causing the clutch to slip and not reach the position the sensor expects. The sensor reads an intermediate position that the board cannot interpret.

    Loose sensor wiring

The wire harness connector between the clutch sensor and the control board vibrates loose. The intermittent connection causes sporadic PE errors.

    Defective control board

The clutch control circuit on the main board fails, preventing proper clutch shifting commands and misinterpreting sensor feedback.

    How to Fix It

    1. 1

      Power cycle the washer

Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Run a Normal cycle. If PE was caused by a temporary sensor glitch or a stuck clutch, the power cycle sometimes clears it.

Unplug the washer from the outlet, not just the power strip.

    2. 2

      Access the clutch assembly

Unplug the washer. The clutch is located under the outer tub on Samsung top-load washers. You need to tilt the washer back and support it securely, or lay it on its front (with the top cushioned by a blanket). The clutch and sensor are visible from the bottom. Alternatively, remove the rear or bottom access panel depending on your model.

The washer is heavy. Use a second person and secure the machine so it cannot fall.

    3. 3

      Inspect the clutch sensor wiring

Find the small wire harness connector attached to the clutch position sensor. Disconnect and reconnect it firmly. Check the wires for damage, pinching, or corrosion. Repair or replace any damaged wiring.

    4. 4

      Test the clutch position sensor

Disconnect the sensor harness. Set a multimeter to ohms. Test resistance across the sensor terminals. Refer to your model's service manual for the exact expected value, but typical Samsung clutch sensors read between 5 and 15 ohms. An open circuit (OL) or zero ohms means the sensor is defective. Replace the sensor.

    5. 5

      Inspect the clutch plates

While the clutch area is accessible, look for black dust or worn material around the clutch housing. This indicates the friction plates are worn. A worn clutch will not engage fully, causing both PE errors and weak or no spin. If the clutch is worn, replace the entire clutch assembly.

    6. 6

      Test after repair

Reassemble the washer. Plug it in and run a Normal cycle with a small load. Verify the washer transitions from wash to spin without displaying PE. Listen for the clutch engaging -- you should hear a smooth transition, not grinding or slipping.

    When to Call a Professional

The clutch assembly is difficult to access and requires tilting or partially disassembling the washer. Call a technician if you are not comfortable working underneath the machine or if the clutch assembly itself needs replacement. TruePro charges a $59 diagnostic fee credited toward the repair. All work includes a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Call 877-378-3111 for same-day service in LA County, Orange County, or Ventura County. CA License #51112.

    Samsung Washer PE β€” FAQ

Yes. The clutch assembly and its position sensor are exclusive to Samsung top-load washers. Front-load models use a different drive system with no clutch. If your front-loader shows PE, check for a mislabeled code or consult your model's error code chart.

Yes. A worn clutch causes weak spin performance, wet clothes at the end of the cycle, grinding noises during the wash-to-spin transition, and clothes that smell musty because they are not spinning dry. Replace the clutch assembly to fix all of these symptoms.

A Samsung washer clutch typically lasts 5 to 8 years under normal use. Heavy or frequent loads accelerate wear. If your washer is running 8 or more loads per week, the clutch wears faster.
