    What Error Code AE Means

Your Samsung washer displays AE when the main control board and the sub-board (also called the interface board or display board) lose communication with each other. These two boards exchange data constantly during operation. The main board manages motor, heater, valve, and pump control. The sub-board handles the user interface, buttons, and display. When the data link between them breaks, the washer cannot operate and displays AE.

    Also shown as:
    AC
    13E
    13C

    Common Causes

    Loose wire harness between boards

The ribbon cable or multi-pin wire harness connecting the main control board to the sub-board vibrates loose. This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix.

    Damaged communication cable

The cable between the boards is pinched, cut, or has corroded pins. Physical damage breaks the serial data link.

    Failed sub-board (display/interface board)

The sub-board in the control panel fails. A burned component or corroded solder joint on the sub-board prevents it from sending or receiving data.

    Failed main control board

The communication circuit on the main board fails. This is less common but happens when power surges damage the board's data transceiver.

    Power supply issue

Unstable power from the wall outlet causes the boards to reset at different times, breaking synchronization. A weak outlet connection, a tripped GFCI, or voltage fluctuations can trigger this.

    How to Fix It

    1. 1

      Power cycle the washer

Unplug the washer for 10 minutes. This forces both boards to reset simultaneously. Plug the washer back in and see if the AE code clears. If the code was caused by a momentary sync loss, this resolves it.

    2. 2

      Check the wall outlet

Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet the washer uses. Verify the outlet has steady power. If the outlet is on a GFCI circuit, press the Reset button on the GFCI outlet. Samsung washers should be on a dedicated 20-amp circuit. Shared circuits with other appliances cause voltage drops that trigger communication errors.

    3. 3

      Re-seat the inter-board wire harness

Unplug the washer. Remove the top panel (two Phillips screws at the rear). Locate the main control board, usually in a plastic housing at the rear top. The wire harness (ribbon cable or multi-pin connector) running from the main board to the front control panel is the communication link. Disconnect the connector on the main board end, inspect the pins for corrosion or damage, and re-seat it firmly.

The washer must be unplugged. Handle the control board by its edges to avoid static damage.

    4. 4

      Inspect the sub-board connector

Remove the screws holding the front control panel in place. Tilt the panel forward to access the sub-board. Locate the matching connector on the sub-board and re-seat it. Inspect the ribbon cable along its full length for pinch marks, cuts, or burn marks.

    5. 5

      Visually inspect both boards

Look at both the main control board and the sub-board for obvious damage. Check for burned or blackened components, swollen capacitors (bulging tops), cracked solder joints, or signs of moisture. A damaged board needs replacement.

    6. 6

      Replace the faulty board

If the wire harness is intact and the connectors are clean but AE persists, one of the boards is faulty. The sub-board is the more common failure point. Order the correct replacement board by your model number. Swap the board, reconnect the harness, and test. If AE continues with a new sub-board, the main control board is the problem.

    When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if the AE code persists after re-seating the wire harness, as board-level diagnosis requires specific testing equipment. TruePro charges a $59 diagnostic fee that is credited toward the repair. All work is backed by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Same-day service is often available in LA County, Orange County, and Ventura County. Call 877-378-3111. CA License #51112.

    Samsung Washer AE β€” FAQ

AE and AC are the same error. Samsung uses AC on newer model lines and AE on older ones. The codes 13E and 13C also indicate the same communication failure. Troubleshooting is identical for all four codes.

Yes. A power surge or voltage spike can damage the communication circuit on either the main board or the sub-board. Plug your washer into a surge protector rated for appliances (not a standard power strip) to prevent this.

Start with the sub-board. It fails more often because it sits behind the control panel where heat and moisture accumulate. The sub-board is also less expensive. If a new sub-board does not fix AE, then replace the main board.
