    What Error Code 6E Means

Error code 6E indicates the ambient (room) temperature sensor is not sending a valid reading to the main control board. This sensor tells the fridge how warm the surrounding room is so it can adjust compressor and fan speed accordingly. A failed ambient sensor causes the fridge to run inefficiently -- overcooling in a warm kitchen or undercooling in a cold garage. On newer models, this displays as 6C.

    Also shown as:
    6C

    Common Causes

    Failed ambient thermistor

The ambient temperature sensor, typically located behind the front grille or on the control board housing, has an open or shorted circuit.

    Heat damage from nearby appliances

A stove, dishwasher, or heating vent positioned too close to the fridge exposes the ambient sensor to extreme temperatures that degrade the component over time.

    Disconnected or pinched wire

The ambient sensor wire runs along the exterior frame of the fridge. Moving the unit for cleaning or installation pinches the wire against the cabinet or wall.

    Control board circuit failure

The input circuit on the main PCB for the ambient sensor has failed, returning a fault code even with a good sensor attached.

    How to Fix It

    1. 1

      Power reset

Unplug the refrigerator for 60 seconds. Plug it back in. If the 6E code clears and does not return within 15 minutes, the error was a momentary communication fault.

Unplug the unit before inspecting any components.

    2. 2

      Locate the ambient sensor

The ambient temperature sensor is usually behind the front kick plate or base grille at the bottom of the fridge. Remove the grille by pulling it straight forward or releasing the two clips on each end. The sensor is a small thermistor mounted on a bracket or attached to the control housing. It has a two-wire connector.

    3. 3

      Inspect the wiring

Trace the wire from the sensor to where it connects to the main harness. Look for pinch points where the wire passes behind the fridge or through the base frame. Check the connector pins for corrosion. Clean with electronics contact cleaner if needed. Reseat the connector.

    4. 4

      Test the ambient sensor

Disconnect the sensor. Set a multimeter to the 20k-ohm range. At room temperature (77 degrees F), the ambient thermistor reads approximately 5 kOhms. If you get OL or 0 ohms, the sensor has failed. Order a replacement matching your model number from the data sticker inside the fridge door.

Ensure the fridge is unplugged before disconnecting the sensor.

    5. 5

      Replace the ambient sensor

Unmount the old sensor from its bracket. Connect the new sensor to the harness plug. Secure it in the original mounting position. Reattach the front grille. Plug the fridge in and verify the 6E code does not return over the next 30 minutes.

    When to Call a Professional

Call a technician if the code returns after sensor replacement, if the main control board needs diagnosis, or if you cannot locate the ambient sensor on your specific model. TruePro's $59 diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair. All work includes a 90-day warranty on parts and labor (CA License #51112). Same-day service is often available across LA County, Orange County, and Ventura County. Call 877-378-3111.

    OptionEstimated Cost
    DIY (parts only)$10 - $35
    Professional repair$140 - $280

Ambient sensors are inexpensive parts. Professional cost includes the diagnostic fee (credited toward repair) and labor. If the main board is at fault, total cost rises to $300-$500.

    Samsung Refrigerator 6E β€” FAQ

Error 6E means the ambient (room) temperature sensor is not communicating properly with the main control board. The sensor has failed, the wire is broken, or the connector has come loose.

Yes. Samsung uses 6E on older models and 6C on newer models. Both codes mean the same ambient sensor fault.

The ambient sensor sits behind the front kick plate (base grille) on most Samsung models. Remove the grille to access it. On some models, it is mounted near the main control board housing.

Yes. Without accurate room temperature data, the control board defaults to running the compressor harder than necessary. This overcools the compartments and increases energy consumption.
