What Error Code 41E Means
The 41E error code tells you the ice bucket full sensor (also called the ice level sensor) is malfunctioning. This sensor uses an infrared beam or mechanical arm to detect when the ice bucket is full. When the sensor fails, the ice maker either stops making ice because it thinks the bucket is full, or it overproduces ice and jams. Samsung also displays this as 41C on certain models.
Common Causes
Frost covering the IR sensor
Ice crystals or frost have formed over the infrared emitter or receiver lens. The blocked beam tricks the sensor into reading a permanently full bucket.
Misaligned ice bucket
The ice bucket is not seated correctly in its rail. The sensor cannot get an accurate reading because the bucket sits at the wrong height or angle relative to the sensor.
Failed IR sensor board
The small circuit board containing the infrared emitter and receiver has failed. One or both LEDs are dead, and the control board gets no signal.
Broken mechanical ice level arm
On models with a mechanical feeler arm instead of IR, the arm is bent, stuck, or the microswitch it connects to is defective.
How to Fix It
- 1
Remove and empty the ice bucket
Pull the ice bucket straight out of the freezer. Dump all ice. Check that no clumps of ice are stuck to the sides or bottom of the bucket. Wash the bucket with warm water and dry it completely.
- 2
Clean the ice level sensor
Locate the two small sensor windows on opposite sides of the ice bucket compartment — one is the IR emitter and one is the receiver. Wipe both lenses with a soft dry cloth. Remove any frost, ice, or condensation. If frost is heavy, use a hair dryer on low for 1-2 minutes.
- 3
Reseat the ice bucket
Slide the bucket back into the freezer, making sure it clicks into both rails and sits flush against the back wall. A misaligned bucket is one of the most common causes of this error.
- 4
Reset the refrigerator
Unplug the unit for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Monitor the display for 24 hours. If 41E returns, the sensor hardware has a confirmed failure.
- 5
Test the IR sensor (if equipped)
Use your smartphone camera to check if the IR emitter is active. Point your phone camera at the emitter lens — an active IR LED appears as a faint purple glow on your phone screen. If you see no glow when the ice maker is active, the IR emitter board is dead.
Unplug the refrigerator before touching or removing any sensor components.
- 6
Replace the ice level sensor assembly
Order the OEM Samsung ice level sensor for your model. Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the screws holding the sensor board bracket (typically 1-2 screws per side). Disconnect the wire harness, install the new sensor, reconnect the harness, and test with a full reset.
