    What Error Code 40E Means

The 40E error code means the ice maker fan motor has stopped working or is not reaching the correct speed. This fan circulates cold air over the ice mold to accelerate freezing. Without it, ice production slows dramatically or stops entirely. The display shows 40C on some Samsung models — same fault, same fix.

    Also shown as:
    40C

    Common Causes

    Burned-out fan motor

The fan motor windings have failed. The motor draws no current and does not spin. This is the most frequent cause of the 40E code, especially on units older than 5 years.

Ice buildup blocking the fan blade

Frost or solid ice has accumulated around the fan blade, physically preventing it from spinning. The motor strains against the ice and eventually triggers the error.

Disconnected or damaged fan wire harness

The two-pin connector running from the fan motor to the main PCB is loose, corroded, or cut. No power reaches the motor.

    Main control board relay failure

The relay on the main PCB that powers the ice maker fan has failed. The board is not sending 12V DC to the fan motor despite the motor being functional.

    How to Fix It

    1. 1

      Listen for the fan

Open the freezer door and press the door switch to simulate a closed door (the small button or lever in the door frame). Listen near the ice maker area for the fan spinning. If you hear nothing, the fan is confirmed dead or blocked.

    2. 2

      Unplug and access the fan

Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the ice bucket and ice maker assembly. The ice maker fan is mounted behind or beside the ice maker housing. Remove the screws holding the fan cover panel (usually 2-4 Phillips head screws) to expose the fan blade and motor.

Unplug the refrigerator before removing any panels or components.

    3. 3

Clear any ice around the blade

If ice has formed around the fan blade, use a hair dryer on low heat to melt it. Do not chip at the ice with a screwdriver — you will damage the blade. Wipe away all moisture with a dry cloth after thawing.

    4. 4

Spin the fan blade by hand

Turn the fan blade with your finger. It should spin freely with minimal resistance. If it is stiff, grinding, or locked, the motor bearings are shot and the motor needs replacement.

    5. 5

      Test the motor electrically

Disconnect the fan motor wire harness. Set your multimeter to DC volts. Plug the refrigerator back in and measure voltage at the board-side connector. You should see approximately 12V DC when the fan should be running. If voltage is present but the motor does not spin, replace the fan motor. If no voltage is present, the main control board is the problem.

Use caution when testing live voltage. Keep your hands away from other components while the unit is plugged in.

    6. 6

      Replace the fan motor

Order the Samsung ice maker fan motor for your model number. Remove the two or three screws holding the motor bracket. Disconnect the old motor, mount the new one, reconnect the harness, and reassemble the cover panel and ice maker.

    When to Call a Professional

If you are not comfortable testing live voltage at the control board, call a licensed technician. TruePro's $59 diagnostic fee gets credited toward your repair, and all work includes a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Same-day service is often available across LA County, Orange County, and Ventura County. Call 877-378-3111 or use code NEW15 to save 15% on labor as a first-time customer.

    Samsung Refrigerator 40E — FAQ

40C is the same error as 40E. Samsung uses different suffix letters across model generations. Both codes indicate the ice maker fan is not operating. The repair steps are the same.

Yes. The ice maker fan is separate from the main freezer evaporator fan. Your freezer continues cooling food normally. Only ice production is affected.

Yes. If the root cause of the frost is not fixed — such as a bad door gasket, a failed defrost heater, or leaving the door ajar — ice will reform around the fan blade and trigger 40E again. Fix the frost source, not just the symptom.
