What Error Code 21E Means
Error code 21E means the freezer evaporator fan is not spinning or the control board receives no rotational feedback from the fan motor. This fan circulates cold air from the evaporator coils throughout the freezer and into the fridge compartment. Without it, temperatures rise in both compartments even though the compressor runs normally. Newer Samsung models display this as 21C.
Common Causes
Burned-out fan motor
The freezer evaporator fan motor has failed electrically. The windings are open or the internal electronics are dead. The fan does not spin at all.
Ice buildup blocking the fan blade
Frost accumulates on the evaporator or fan blade and physically prevents rotation. The motor is still good but cannot overcome the ice.
Failed fan motor feedback sensor
Samsung freezer fans use a Hall effect sensor or tachometer wire to report speed to the board. A failed feedback circuit triggers 21E even if the blade spins.
Disconnected fan harness
The wire plug between the fan motor and the main harness has worked loose from vibration. The motor gets no power or cannot send feedback.
How to Fix It
- 1
Listen for the fan and check airflow
Open the freezer door and press the door switch (the small button or lever that the door pushes when closed). Hold it in for 15 seconds. Listen for the fan running behind the rear panel. If you hear nothing, the fan is not spinning. If you hear grinding or clicking, ice is blocking the blade.
Keep hands away from the fan area while pressing the door switch.
- 2
Access the freezer fan
Unplug the refrigerator. Remove all food, shelves, and drawers from the freezer. Unscrew the rear panel inside the freezer (Phillips screwdriver, 4-6 screws plus any retaining clips). Carefully pull the panel forward to expose the evaporator coils and fan assembly.
- 3
Clear ice from the fan and evaporator
If ice is present on or around the fan blade, leave the fridge unplugged with the freezer open for 4-6 hours to defrost. Do not chip ice off the fan blade with tools -- you risk cracking the blade or bending the motor shaft. After defrosting, spin the fan blade by hand. It should rotate freely with minimal resistance.
Never use sharp tools to remove ice from evaporator fins or fan blades.
- 4
Test the fan motor
Disconnect the fan motor plug from the harness. Set a multimeter to the 200-ohm range. Measure across the motor power leads. A working Samsung freezer fan motor reads between 100-300 ohms depending on the model. OL means the motor windings are open and the motor needs replacement. Common Samsung replacement part: DA31-00146E or model-specific equivalent.
Confirm the refrigerator is unplugged before testing.
- 5
Replace the fan motor
Remove the old motor by unscrewing the mounting bracket (typically 2-3 screws). Transfer the fan blade to the new motor shaft if it is not included. Mount the new motor, connect the harness plug, and reassemble the rear panel. Plug in the fridge and verify the fan spins and the 21E code clears.
When to Call a Professional
Call a technician if ice buildup keeps returning (indicating a separate defrost system problem), if the fan motor tests good but the 21E code persists, or if you are uncomfortable removing the freezer rear panel. TruePro charges a $59 diagnostic fee credited toward the repair. Every repair includes a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Same-day service is often available across LA County, Orange County, and Ventura County. Call 877-378-3111. First-time customers get 15% off labor with code NEW15.
