What Error Code OE Means
The OE error code on your LG washer means the machine tried to drain the water but failed. The washer gives itself about 10 minutes to empty the tub. If water remains after that window, the OE code appears and the cycle stops. Standing water stays in the drum until you fix the blockage.
Common Causes
Clogged drain pump filter
Lint, coins, hair ties, and small debris build up inside the drain pump filter over time. This is the number one cause of the OE error on LG washers.
Kinked or clogged drain hose
The corrugated drain hose running from the back of the washer to your standpipe or utility sink gets kinked when the unit is pushed too close to the wall. Debris inside the hose also restricts flow.
Faulty drain pump motor
The drain pump uses a small impeller driven by an electric motor. If the motor windings burn out or the impeller cracks, the pump cannot expel water even with a clear path.
Standpipe or plumbing blockage
The wall drain itself is clogged. If other fixtures on the same line drain slowly, the problem is in your home plumbing, not the washer.
How to Fix It
- 1
Cancel the cycle and power off
Press the Power button to turn off the washer. Unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Grab towels and a shallow pan β water will spill when you open the filter.
Always unplug the washer before accessing the drain pump filter to avoid electrical shock.
- 2
Drain residual water through the emergency drain hose
Open the small access panel on the front-bottom of the washer. Pull out the small black emergency drain hose. Place the end in a shallow pan and remove the cap. Let the water flow out. Empty the pan as needed. This drains the tub without making a mess.
- 3
Clean the drain pump filter
With the tub drained, twist the large drain pump filter cap counterclockwise and pull it out. Remove any lint, coins, hair ties, or debris wrapped around the filter and inside the filter housing. Inspect the pump impeller behind the filter β spin it with your finger to confirm it rotates freely. Reinstall the filter and hand-tighten clockwise.
- 4
Inspect the drain hose
Pull the washer away from the wall. Check the corrugated drain hose for kinks or sharp bends. Disconnect the hose from the standpipe and blow through it or run water through it with a garden hose to confirm it is clear. Straighten any kinks and reconnect.
- 5
Test the drain pump motor
Plug the washer back in and run a Spin Only cycle. Listen for the drain pump humming at the start of the cycle. If you hear a loud buzzing but no water movement, the pump motor is straining against a jam or the impeller is broken. If you hear nothing, the pump motor has likely failed and needs replacement.
- 6
Check your home plumbing
Run water directly into the standpipe with a bucket. If it backs up or drains slowly, the clog is in your plumbing, not the washer. Use a drain snake to clear the standpipe.
