What Error Code Er CF Means
The Er CF code tells you the condenser fan motor is not running. This fan sits near the compressor at the bottom-rear of the unit. It pulls air across the condenser coils to dissipate heat. Without it, the compressor overheats and shuts down. Your refrigerator stops cooling entirely.
Common Causes
Burned-out condenser fan motor
The motor windings fail from years of continuous operation. The motor receives power but does not spin. This is the number one cause of Er CF.
Debris blocking the fan blade
Dust, pet hair, and small objects collect around the condenser fan area. A plastic bag, twist tie, or chunk of dust can jam the blade and stall the motor.
Loose or corroded wire connector
The connector at the condenser fan motor vibrates loose over time. Corrosion on the terminals creates an open circuit. The board sees no fan feedback and triggers Er CF.
Failed main control board relay
The relay on the main PCB that drives the condenser fan burns out. The motor is fine, but it receives no power. You hear the compressor run but never hear the condenser fan kick on.
How to Fix It
- 1
Unplug and access the condenser fan
Pull the refrigerator away from the wall. Unplug it. Remove the rear lower access panel by unscrewing the screws or releasing the clips. The condenser fan is mounted next to the compressor.
Unplug the refrigerator before removing any panels. The compressor area contains high-voltage components.
- 2
Clear any debris
Inspect the fan blade area for dust buildup, pet hair, or foreign objects. Use a vacuum with a crevice attachment to clean around the blade, motor, and condenser coils. Spin the blade by hand to confirm it rotates freely.
- 3
Check the wire connector
Disconnect and reconnect the fan motor's wire harness. Look for green corrosion or blackened pins on the connector. Clean corroded pins with electrical contact cleaner and a small brush. A damaged connector needs replacement.
- 4
Test the fan motor
Disconnect the motor's wire harness. Set a multimeter to the 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance across the motor terminals. Expect 50-200 ohms on a working motor. OL or zero means the motor is burned out. Order a replacement condenser fan motor for your specific LG model number.
Verify the unit is unplugged before probing any electrical connections.
- 5
Test for power at the connector
If the motor reads good, plug the refrigerator back in and use a multimeter set to AC volts to check for voltage at the fan motor connector while the compressor runs. You should see approximately 120V AC. No voltage means the main control board relay has failed and the board needs replacement.
Live voltage testing is dangerous. Only perform this step if you are experienced with electrical testing. Otherwise, call a licensed technician.
When to Call a Professional
Call a technician if the motor tests bad, if there is no voltage at the connector, or if you are not comfortable testing live circuits. TruePro offers a $59 diagnostic fee that applies as a credit toward the repair bill. All repairs include a 90-day warranty on parts and labor under CA License #51112. Book same-day service by calling 877-378-3111. First-time customers get 15% off labor with code NEW15.
