Whirlpool Appliance Diagnosis
Whirlpool is America's most popular appliance brand — and we've been fixing them for 35 years.
Whirlpool is the largest appliance manufacturer in the world, and for good reason — their products are generally reliable, reasonably priced, and well-supported with parts. When Whirlpool appliances do break, parts are cheap and readily available from a dozen different suppliers. Simon has repaired more Whirlpools than any other brand in his 35-year career.
Common Whirlpool problems we diagnose
F5E2 or F5E3 (door lock error)
Very commonWasher
The door lock mechanism fails or the door strike is misaligned. The washer won't start because it thinks the door is open. A $40-80 part fixes it.
Not spinning or slow spin
CommonWasher
On top-loaders, the lid switch or actuator has failed. On front-loaders, it's often the motor control board or drive belt. Both are affordable repairs.
Not cooling but running
CommonRefrigerator
Dirty condenser coils or a failed evaporator fan motor. Pull the fridge out, clean the coils (back or bottom), and see if cooling improves. If not, it's probably the fan ($100-200).
Not cleaning dishes well
CommonDishwasher
Clogged spray arms, worn wash impeller, or a failing circulation pump. Start by cleaning the filter and spray arm nozzles — often solves it for free.
Oven not heating evenly
CommonOven/Range
The bake element has partially failed (often visible as a spot that glows differently) or the temperature sensor is reading wrong. Both are simple, affordable repairs.
Takes two cycles to dry
Very commonDryer
Almost always a venting issue, not a dryer problem. If the vent is clear, check the heating element and thermal fuse. Whirlpool dryers are designed for easy element access.
Whirlpool error codes we see most
| Code | Appliance | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| F5E2 | Washer | Door lock error — check door latch and lock mechanism |
| F7E1 | Washer | Motor speed sensing error — motor or control board |
| F2E1 | Washer/Oven | Stuck key on control panel |
| F9E1 | Washer | Long drain — pump or drain hose clogged |
| F1E1 | Dishwasher | Main control board communication error |
| F5 | Oven | Door latch signal not received |
Should you repair or replace your Whirlpool?
Whirlpool appliances are among the most cost-effective to repair. Parts are inexpensive, widely available, and the brand designs their machines for serviceability. Unless you're dealing with a compressor failure on a fridge over 10 years old or a transmission on a washer over 8 years old, repair almost always makes sense with Whirlpool.
Whirlpool owns more brands than you think
Whirlpool Corporation also makes Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana appliances. Many of these brands share components and designs. If you have a Maytag or KitchenAid appliance, the diagnosis process is similar — Simon knows the entire Whirlpool family of brands.
Parts availability advantage
One of the biggest advantages of owning a Whirlpool is parts availability. Because they're the most popular brand, parts are stocked everywhere — you can often get same-day pickup at a local parts distributor. This means faster repairs and lower parts costs compared to less common brands.

FAQ
Are Whirlpool appliances good quality?+
Yes. Whirlpool is the most popular brand in America for a reason — solid build quality, reasonable prices, and excellent parts availability. They're not flashy, but they're reliable workhorses. Most common repairs are in the $100-250 range.
My Whirlpool washer shows F5E2 — what do I do?+
F5E2 is a door lock error. First, try power cycling (unplug for 5 minutes). If it comes back, the door latch or lock mechanism needs replacement — it's a $40-80 part and a 15-minute fix. We can walk you through it on video.
Are Whirlpool and Maytag the same company?+
Yes — Whirlpool Corporation owns both brands (plus KitchenAid and Amana). Maytag and Whirlpool products often share internal components, even if the exterior design differs. Parts from one frequently work in the other.
Where's the model number on my Whirlpool?+
Washers: inside the lid/door frame. Dryers: inside the door. Fridges: inside the fresh food compartment, usually on the left side wall. Dishwashers: inside the door, on the left side edge. Format example: WFW5605MW.
