Unlike other brands that use thicker mica waveguide covers, Maytag utilizes a thinner composite material that becomes brittle over time, especially in high-humidity environments. The brand's signature stainless steel interior, while durable, can develop microscopic scratches that create arcing points when the protective coating wears thin.

The Commercial Technology platform used in many Maytag countertop and over-the-range models features a unique magnetron positioning that directs more concentrated energy toward the right side of the cavity. This design characteristic, while effective for even heating, accelerates wear on the waveguide cover and can cause premature paint deterioration around the stirrer cover area.
