Unlike other brands that use traditional defrost systems, many GE units employ adaptive defrost technology that relies heavily on electronic sensors and control boards – components that frequently malfunction after 8-10 years of operation. The WR55X series control boards are especially prone to failure, causing erratic temperature control and complete cooling loss.

GE's side-by-side and French door models also feature a unique air flow system where the evaporator fan motor (commonly the WR60X10185 or WR60X10220) works harder than comparable brands due to the refrigerator's internal air circulation design. This increased workload, combined with GE's tendency to use plastic fan blades that become brittle over time, leads to premature motor failure. Additionally, GE refrigerators use a specific refrigerant charging system that makes them more susceptible to sealed system problems when the condenser coils become heavily clogged – a common issue in their bottom-freezer models.
